The promise rings symbolize the promise made between two people. They can refer to such kind of vows as vow of fidelity, vow of eternal love, vow of eternal gratitude, marriage vow. Often on the inner side of the ring there is the words of the vow (eg, “I’m only my beloved’s and my beloved is only mine”). Men’s promise rings are usually black, but also steel, blue, etc. According to the semantic values of these rings they are very close to the eternity rings (Johnny has been wearing the eternity ring on the ‘wedding’ finger of his left hand since June 2009, he’s been never seen without it and still wears it). These rings have particular importance for gay couples in the countries where there is a ban on gay marriage - they wear them as engagement or wedding rings.
